Connecticut Innovations (CI) is the state’s strategic venture capital arm and the leading source of financing and ongoing support for Connecticut’s innovative, growing companies. CI provides access to capital and its network of talent and partners to help companies grow, including its talent acquisition and InLab programs. CI invests across a variety of industries, spanning technology, healthcare, biotech, climate tech, consumer packaged goods, and venture funds.

Sonata Scientific’s technology platform originated in a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF): Award number 1927003, “Removal of VOCs using novel photocatalytic materials and systems.” NSF’s SBIR program funds startups to create the next game-changing technologies — often based on fundamental science or engineering — in need of research and development to create new products, services, and other scalable solutions.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has supported Sonata Scientific via several SBIR projects targeting pathogen inactivation. Current funding through EPA Contract# 68HERC23C0003, “Ultrahigh efficacy air purifier for airborne pathogens,” focuses on the removal of airborne pathogens in indoor spaces using Sonata’s patented photocatalytic technology.

Sonata Scientific has received support from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), via an SBIR program focused on ethylene control using Sonata’s photocatalytic platform. Several important innovations resulted from Sonata’s NIFA SBIR grant, “Ultrahigh efficiency ethylene scrubber to increase shelf life of fresh produce,” FAIN 20193361030486, which are currently applied to the development of ethylene oxide control products.
